Wilderness First Aid
This is a hands-on, two-day course which covers a wide range of wilderness medicine topics for people who travel in the outdoors. Whether spending time in the backcountry is your passion or your profession, you should never have to ask, "What do I do now?" In this course, you'll learn how to prepare for the unexpected. WMI's curriculum is unique and includes many advanced topics that other programs leave out such as dislocation reduction, focused spinal assessment and epinephrine administration. In just two days, you'll have the knowledge, skills and ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations. This course is ideal for trip leaders, camp staff, outdoor enthusiasts, TRTA volunteers and members, and individuals in remote locations. WMI's course is pre-approved by such organizations as the American Camping Association, the United States Forest Service, and other governmental agencies. This course does not include CPR. Offered May 1-2 & June 26-27, 2010. Contact programs@tahoerimtrail.org (775)-298-0238 for registration forms.
Chainsaw Certification
Help clear trees from the trail! Each spring, chainsaw training is taught by seasoned sawyers and qualifies trainees as a Forest Service ‘A' or ‘B' sawyer. This certification is required to cut trees with the Forest Service or TRTA. The course will consist of classroom and hands-on field work. There is no cost for the training; however, participation is limited to trail volunteers, Backcountry Horsemen, and some conservation corps members.
TRTA ‘A’ level sawyers must be accompanied by ‘B’ level sawyers in the field. TRTA owns and maintains chainsaws for the purpose of clearing downed and dangerous trees. The Director of Trail Operations maintains a list of trail conditions and tree removal is coordinated between TRTA sawyers and the US Forest Service. Note: In order to become a TRTA sawyer, individuals must be currently CPR & First Aid certified. Two-day course will be offered once in the spring. Contact trails@tahoerimtrail.org (775) 298-0239 for registration information.
