This course provides individuals with a foundation in important first-aid concepts critical to responding effectively to emergencies in a remote backcountry environment. \nThis fast-paced\, hands-on training is designed to meet the needs of trip leaders\, camp staff\, outdoor enthusiasts\, and individuals working in remote locations. It will introduce you to caring for people who become ill or injured far from definitive medical care. Classroom lectures and demonstrations are combined with realistic scenarios where mock patients will challenge you to integrate your learning. At the end of the course\, you’ll have the knowledge\, skills\, and ability to make sound decisions in emergencies. \nThis course may also be used to recertify NOLS Wilderness Medicine Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and NOLS Wilderness Medicine WEMT (wilderness portion only) certifications. \nClose physical contact is an inherent part of this course. Vaccines\, boosters\, and negative tests are not required to attend this course but all students are encouraged to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and up-to-date with any boosters they are eligible to receive. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nThe Tahoe Rim Trail Association\, in partnership with Keep Tahoe Blue\, American Hiking Society and Nevada State Parks\, is kicking off the trail season by spending the day caring for one of the most loved trail systems in the Tahoe Basin\, Van Sickle Bi-State Park.\nNational Trails Day is a chance to get outdoors\, connect with your community\, and give back to the places you love! This year\, you get to choose between trail work with the TRTA and a trash cleanup with Keep Tahoe Blue. \nEveryone will meet at Van Sickle Bi-State Park at 8:30 AM to share a cup of coffee and pastries with our fellow community members. After grabbing some snacks\, folks cleaning up will split off from the trail workers and both groups will get to work! Due to the creation of social trails cutting the switchbacks\, the main trail is sliding away and in need of repair. We will be repairing tread and blocking the social trails with brush. Other trail work may include brushing/lopping\, drainage work\, and other trail maintenance.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nDifficulty:\nThe trail work site is approximately a half mile and 250 feet of ascent from the VSSP trailhead. Parking is limited and available on a first-come\, first-served basis. During this hike and interactive presentation\, discover how SPF is working to create healthier forests for future generations. You will learn tips and tricks to enjoy a night out in the true Tahoe backcountry\, and practice planning all the trip logistics from choosing a destination to building a food menu. We welcome new and seasoned backcountry enthusiasts eager to upgrade their wilderness experience by learning how to backpack for the first time or adding to your existing skills. \nStudents can expect an afternoon in the classroom\, followed by a weekend overnight hike in the field for hands-on practice and to experience genuine backcountry living. There is also a virtual ‘shakedown’ meeting the weeks before hitting the trail to go over people’s gear\, discuss any questions\, and allow time for adjustments. Much of the essential backpacking gear can be provided to borrow during this event for folks that don’t have their own equipment. \nThe classroom portion will provide concepts in trip planning\, Leave No Trace principles and bear safety\, critical gear needs and how to pack\, and how to thrive in outdoor environments while mitigating risk to yourself and others. The field portion of this course is not an endurance test but will consist of a 5-mile hike into a wilderness area where students will receive hands-on instruction in making a successful camp\, water treatment\, cooking\, travel\, how to use gear\, and how to do all of this while protecting the environment. This four-day backcountry trail work experience takes place in Desolation Wilderness near Lake Aloha.\nSpend your days working on the trail you love\, your evenings camping among the stunning granite landscapes of the Sierra Nevada\, all while connecting with a passionate and welcoming trail community.\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][vc_text_separator title=”Lake Aloha Camp Info” color=”black” border_width=”2″ css=””][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nProject:\nAccess to Lake Aloha is challenging\, and this section of the Tahoe Rim Trail sees heavy use\, resulting in a cupped tread and areas of standing water. During this project\, we’ll use natural materials found near the trail to improve the trail surface\, enhance drainage\, and create a more sustainable route for hikers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nDifficulty:\nThis stewardship camp is for experienced backpackers\, preferably those who have spent time at high elevation as Lake Aloha is at 8\,118 feet elevation.
