SUMMARY:Desolation Wilderness Backcountry Camp August 1 - August 4\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_btn title=”Register Here!” color=”danger” size=”lg” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tfaforms.com%2F4967212|target:_blank”][vc_column_text]Join the TRTA as we reconstruct the PCT/TRT deep in Desolation Wilderness. Our work will focus on constructing stone steps and armoring drains to combat erosion.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=”9538″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space height=”10px”][vc_column_text] \nWhat to Expect\nThis Wilderness Backpacking Camp in Desolation Wilderness requires a 5.5-mile climb to the campsite while carrying all your gear\, food\, and supplies to camp out and work for four days. Bear-proof food storage\, such as a bear keg\, is required (bear hangs are not allowed). This is an authentic wilderness camp\, and volunteers should have some backpacking experience. A short questionnaire will be required before participation can be confirmed. Meals will be prepared on backpacking stoves. This camp is rated Most Strenuous (but most rewarding!).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \n Please email your interest to KristineK@tahoerimtrail.org or follow the link to sign up.\n\nSchedule\nParticipants will meet the crew on Monday\, August 1st\, at the TRTA office in Stateline\, NV\, and be shuttled to the Bayview trailhead near Emerald Bay at 6:45 am. Volunteers may meet the crew at Bayview TH at 7:45\, but overnight parking at the trailhead is NOT recommended due to recent bear activity (several cars have been damaged in the past few years) and a fee of $10.00. It is recommended that those meeting the crew at Bayview are dropped off/picked up. We’ll pack our gear 5.5 miles and over 1000 feet up to our camp location near Middle Velma Lake. We’ll camp out for three nights\, spending our days repairing eroded sections of the trail by installing and armoring drainage features and building stone steps. There will be plenty of time after work for exploration\, fishing\, swimming\, and enjoying the beauty of Desolation Wilderness. We’ll return to Bayview by the afternoon of Thursday\, August 4th\, and shuttle the crew back to the TRTA office. There is a strict cap on the number of participants on this crew to respect the US Forest Service’s group size limit in Desolation Wilderness. \nPlease note! Our camp and worksite are at a high elevation\, approximately 8000 feet. If you will be traveling from low elevations or are not accustomed to strenuous activity at high elevation\, we recommend you arrive in the Tahoe area several days in advance to acclimate to local conditions. \nWhat to Bring\nAll volunteers must dress appropriately for each day of work\, including long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and sturdy\, closed-toe shoes. You should also bring everything you need for four days in the wilderness\, including lightweight camping and cooking gear\, warm clothes\, etc. Plan to bring containers for at least 3 liters of water\, sunglasses or other eye protection\, sunscreen\, medications\, and other personal items. Don’t have all the fancy stuff? Just let us know; we have the gear to loan out. The TRTA provides food (on request)\, safety equipment such as hard hats and gloves\, tools\, and experienced crew leaders. \nWho to Bring\nWilderness Backpacking Camps require previous backpacking experience\, preferably at altitude in the Sierra Nevada. This is not an appropriate opportunity for people looking to spend their first night in a tent. Minors aged 16+ are welcome so long as a parent or legal guardian accompanies them. Please fill out the Parent/Guardian Permission Form in such a case Parent/Guardian Permission Form. \n  \nCome out and help build some great trails!\n  \nThank you to our generous sponsors!\n  \n  \n                                                 \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Additional parking exists near the paved road if folks do not wish to take their vehicle down a dirt road.  Folks will show up Friday evening and start work on Saturday morning.   Meals will be prepared by a camp cook and all meals will be provided. Please bring your own camping gear. This camp is rated moderate but only because all trail work and camping requires using tools and getting dirty.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \nPlease email  KristineK@tahoerimtrail.org if you have any questions.\nSchedule\nParticipants will meet Friday at 3:30 near the entrance of Spooner Lake State Park. We’ll caravan to our campsite near the worksite. We’ll camp for two nights\, spending Saturday and half of Sunday working on the Sand Harbor Vista Trail near Marlette Peak Campground. \nWhat to Bring\nAll volunteers must dress appropriately for each day of work\, including long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and sturdy\, closed-toe shoes. You should also bring everything you need for three days and two nights\, including camping and cooking gear\, warm clothes\, etc. Plan to bring containers (water bottles\, bladders\, etc.) for at least 3 liters of water\, sunglasses or other eye protection\, sunscreen\, medications\, and other personal items you’ll need. Don’t have all the fancy stuff? Just let us know; we have the gear to loan out. The TRTA will provide breakfast\, lunch\, and dinner\, experienced crew leaders\, tools\, and required safety equipment such as hard hats and gloves. \n\nWho to Bring\nCamping gear\, but this camp does not require previous camping experience. This is an appropriate opportunity for people looking to spend their first night in a tent. Minors aged 16+ are welcome as long as a parent or legal guardian accompanies them. Please fill out the Parent/Guardian Permission Form. \n  \nCome out and help build some great trails!\n  \nThanks to our partners for making this project possible!\n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Trail Talk: Geologic History of the Lake Tahoe Basin
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nGeologic History of the Lake Tahoe Basin at Celebration Point\n  \nThis Trail Talk is taking place on the Tahoe Rim Trail Association’s Anniversary! We’ve decided to hold this event at Celebration Point\, a significant location on the trail for our TRT founders and a spot with amazing views of Lake Tahoe. Join us on September 22\, from 1 PM- 2:30 PM\, for a talk by Dave Schnake\, TRTA Master Trail Builder\, and retired geologist. Ever wonder how Lake Tahoe came to be? It turns out that the creation of Lake Tahoe tells the story of unimaginable global forces that took place over millions of years\, involving thousands of miles of the earth’s surface and at depths many miles beneath it. Dave will give a non-technical explanation of Tahoe’s geology with descriptions of fascinating geological features that you can look for while exploring the trail. This talk will give you a different perspective on the many eye-catching formations in the Tahoe Basin and root you in the rich geological history of the American Northwest. \nCelebration Point is on the north shore near Brockway Summit. To get to this location\, we will drive about 3-miles up a single-lane road.  \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \n\n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text] \nDate\nThursday\, September 22 \n  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text] \nTime\n1:00 PM to ~2:30 PM \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text] \nLocation\nCelebration Point \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text] \nWhat to Bring\nComfortable walking shoes \nSun protection \nWater \nCamp chair (optional) \n  \n  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n\n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \nSpeaker\nRetired Geologist\, Dave Schnake[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=”16382″ img_size=”large”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text] \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n Register Here!\n\n \n Sorry\, this form no longer accepts submissions. \n \n \n \n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
