SUMMARY:Western White Pine Hike w/ the Sugar Pine Foundation
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nThe Sugar Pine Foundation (SPF) is a local non-profit organization dedicated to restoring the natural regeneration of white pines in the Tahoe Region and beyond. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) is the primary steward of the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) System. Together\, our organizations partner to provide educational experiences across the Tahoe Rim Trail and throughout the Basin. \nCome meet the western white pine\, a towering emblem of the American West\, boasting soft needles and a regal presence. It’s not just any tree—it’s a warrior battling threats from logging\, urban sprawl\, and climate woes\, earning its status as a state concern. An introduced fungus has wiped out many of the western white pine west of the Cascades and Tahoe is a significant stronghold for this majestic species. Tree specialist Maria Mircheva will teach us about Sugar Pine Foundation’s efforts to protect this beautiful tree and will lead the group along the Tahoe Rim Trail to see some beautiful examples of this majestic pine. \nCome hike in the woods with us and learn about forest ecology along the way! \nWhat to Expect\nTRTA outings are group outings\, and we do our best to keep the group together. Trip leaders dedicate much of their time throughout the year\, sharing their passion for the outdoors. They are well-trained and experienced. SUMMARY:Summer Exploration Series: North Shore Nature Ramble
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nJoin the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) guides and partner Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) on a stroll from Brockway Summit on Highway 267 along the Tahoe Rim Trail to Picnic Rock with trained naturalists. The TRTA is the primary steward of the Tahoe Rim Trail system\, and TINS is a valuable ecological stewardship organization and community education provider. Together\, our organizations collaborate to provide educational experiences across the Tahoe Rim Trail and throughout the Basin. \nTINS naturalist Will Richardson leads the way in search of wildlife\, wildflowers\, and spectacular scenery along the Tahoe Rim Trail. Enjoy nature’s treasures before soaking up the great views of Lake Tahoe on the north shore. We will discuss natural history topics related to geology\, forest ecology\, birds\, and anything Nature in Tahoe! Bring your binoculars and inquisitive minds for this nature ramble with TRTA and TINS. Exact mileage will be determined by the group’s pace and interest in hiking over observing\, but will not exceed 4 miles during this event. We will gain 750′ from the cars\, so come prepared to hike uphill. \nWhat to Expect\nTRTA outings are group outings\, and we do our best to keep the group together. Trip leaders dedicate much of their time throughout the year\, sharing their passion for the outdoors. They are well-trained and experienced. SUMMARY:Chickadee & Ski Nordic Tour at Chickadee Ridge with TINS
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nAh\, the “Cheese-bur-ger” bird; the call of the Sierra Nevada mountains. But where have all the mountain chickadees gone? What happens to your favorite birds in the winter? Did you know some birds stay here all winter long\, while others migrate south to warmer climates?  \nGlide through Tahoe’s winter wonderland on skis at a winter excursion hosted by TINS and the TRTA. We will take breaks periodically to learn about Tahoe’s forest ecology and bird migration habits while identifying trees and animals that live amongst the Lodgepole Pines. Please bring your own cross-country skis. Depending on the group\, we will travel 3-5 miles on a groomed trail by Nevada Nordic. We will go as fast as the slowest member of the group and can make adjustments along the way. Our route will not have steep hills. This tour is not for beginners and is appropriate for ages 16 and up – please only experienced skiers\, as equipment and coaching will not be provided. Sorry\, no snowshoers on this adventure\, but take a look at our Events Calendar for other opportunities. \nWhat to Expect\nTRTA/TINS treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together. SUMMARY:Winter Navigation with a Map and Compass
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nAre You Ready to Find Yourself in Winter?\n$100 TRTA Members ; $110 TRTA Non-Members\n\nCourse Description\nJoin the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for a day in the classroom and field to learn basic map and compass skills in the winter. This course will teach you one of the most basic and essential outdoor skills- navigation without relying on a battery. Students can expect a morning in the classroom and then hitting the outdoors for hands-on practice. Objectives include map nomenclature and meaning of contour lines\, compass basics\, and orienteering to find one’s position with field practice. \nKnowing how to use a map and compass will greatly reduce your chances of getting lost\, especially in the winter when you can’t see the trail. Maps have stood the test of time and are still pertinent today. The Babylonians created and used one of the oldest surviving maps to this day\, and the Chinese Han Dynasty used magnetic compasses as early as 206 BC. The birth of the smartphone and personal global positioning systems (GPS) have not outdated the centuries-old navigation skill by map and compass. The earth’s magnetic field will never run out of battery. \nNEW! this year is a short introduction to modern navigation technologies like GPS\, how to use your phone to navigate\, some recommended favorite navigation Apps and programs\, and more!\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \n\nCourse Information\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_btn title=”Student Logistics” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1gpaOIwyIOyQcNy6R-Sb_PuN_hT7uR85C%2Fedit|target:_blank”][vc_column_text css=””] \nCancellation Policy\, Local Weather\, Lodging Options \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ftahoerimtrail.my.salesforce-sites.com%2FCnP_PaaS_EVT__ExternalRegistrationPage%3Fevent_id%3Da24Un000003FfKTIA0|target:_blank”][vc_column_text css=””] \nSecure your spot!\nTRTA Members get 10% off. SUMMARY:Winter Wildlife Survival Snowshoe Hike with TINS
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nJoin us for a snowshoe excursion and educational session hosted by TINS and the TRTA. Spend the morning hiking amid high-elevation pine forests on Tahoe’s East Shore at Spooner Lake State Park. We will take breaks periodically to learn about Tahoe’s forest ecology while identifying trees and animals that live amongst the Lodgepole Pines. We will go as fast as the slowest member of the group and can make adjustments along the way. Our route will not have steep hills and stays at 7000′ elevation. SUMMARY:Expedition Echo Snowshoe Trek with Sugar Pine Foundation
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nThe Sugar Pine Foundation (SPF) and the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) have teamed up for a morning snowshoe trek to Echo Lake. This adventure will be a leisurely snowshoe from the Echo Lake Sno-Park (Johnson Pass Rd) to Lower Echo Lake (however\, it could be more challenging if snow levels are deep). Along the way\, our experts and friends at the Sugar Pine Foundation will reveal the mysterious world of trees in winter and touch on the effects of the Caldor Fire. Our destination provides great photo opportunities of Lower Echo Lake and the surrounding mountains of glacial moraine carved out millennia ago. \nWhat to Expect\nTRTA/SPF treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together. Trip leaders dedicate a great deal of their time throughout the year\, sharing their passion for the outdoors. They are well-trained and experienced. Please respect their decisions made on the trail. \nCost\nYour $10 reservation fee is non-refundable. Each vehicle must arrive with a Sno-Park parking permit to park at the meeting location. You can purchase a $15-day permit or $40 season permit online here or at several Sno-Park permit vendors found here.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text] \nDifficulty\nModerate \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nDistance\n3 miles roundtrip \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text] \nLocation\nEcho Lake Sno-Park \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nTime\n10:00 AM to ~1:00 PM \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=””]What to Bring \n\nWater (~one liter per person)\nSnacks\nInsulating clothes – we suggest a wicking layer to go against your skin\nWarm fleece-type layer\nWindbreaker/ warm jacket\nWaterproof pants\nExtra layers\nWinter hat and gloves\nAppropriate footwear\nExtra pair of dry socks\nSnowshoes (can be borrowed from TRTA)\nTrekking poles (can be borrowed from TRTA)\nLip Balm (≥ SPF 15+)\nSunscreen\nSunglasses\nCamera (optional)\nPersonal Medications/Epi-Pen*\n\n*Be sure to communicate any medical issues in a private conversation with your guides at the trailhead.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=””] \nCheck out more about our wonderful partners at the:\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \nFor more information about this event\, contact info@tahoerimtrail.org\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_btn title=”Join the Waistlist Here” color=”danger” align=”center” i_icon_fontawesome=”fas fa-snowflake” css=”” button_block=”true” add_icon=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tfaforms.com%2F4978171|target:_blank”][vc_column_text]Leave No Trace \nWe practice the seven Leave No Trace (LNT) principles on each of our programs. SUMMARY:The Wonders of Wildlife and Water with TINS
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nJoin TINS naturalist Sarah Hockensmith as she leads the way in search of wildlife\, water features\, and spectacular scenery from a beachy waterfront. Enjoy nature’s treasures before soaking up the great views of Sugar Pine Point State Park on Tahoe’s West Shore (tentative location). Sarah will discuss natural history topics related to winter ecology\, including how various animals and plants cope with the short days\, heavy snow\, and freezing temperatures associated with winter in Tahoe. \nThis two-mile\, easy\, out-and-back trek is family-friendly and appropriate for ages 8 and up. If the trails are covered in snow\, TINS or the TRTA can provide snowshoes upon request. TINS can also provide binoculars by request. Please bring some snacks\, as we will enjoy a lakeside picnic at tables near the lakeshore. \nWhat to Expect\nTRTA/TINS treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together.
