The TRTA is the primary steward of the Tahoe Rim Trail system\, and TINS is a valuable ecological stewardship organization and community education provider. Together\, our organizations collaborate to provide educational experiences in this Summer Exploration Series across the Tahoe Rim Trail and throughout the Basin. \nNaturalist Sarah Hockensmith will lead the group along the trail and teach you all about local wildflowers and the animals that rely on them to survive. Together\, our organizations partner to provide educational experiences across the Tahoe Rim Trail and throughout the Basin. \nCome meet the western white pine\, a towering emblem of the American West\, boasting soft needles and a regal presence. It’s not just any tree—it’s a warrior battling threats from logging\, urban sprawl\, and climate woes\, earning its status as a state concern. An introduced fungus has wiped out many of the western white pine west of the Cascades and Tahoe is a significant stronghold for this majestic species. SUMMARY:Horse Meadows Backcountry Camp
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nHorse Meadows Backcountry Camp\nCampout with us at Horse Meadows Trailhead and reroute the existing trail to restore drainage and trail sustainability for years to come.\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][vc_text_separator title=”What to Expect” color=”blue” style=”shadow” border_width=”5″][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \nThis is an overnight trail work camp to improve the TRT connector trail called the Horse Meadows Trail off Highway 89 near Luther Pass. The trail crew will camp near the Horse Meadow Trailhead and work on the Horse Meadows Trail. Volunteers are invited to arrive at camp Thursday evening or Friday morning to start work on Friday morning. Horse Meadows Trailhead requires travel on Forest Service Road 51\, Willow Creek Road\, a 3.3-mile dirt and gravel backcountry road with some navigation around large potholes. A 4WD\, high-clearance vehicle is recommended. There is little to no cell service in this area. An optional shuttle to camp from the TRTA office in Stateline\, NV departs on Thursday at 4:30 PM. All meals are provided by the TRTA and prepared by a camp cook on site. Camping gear is not provided. Hard hats\, tools\, eye protection\, and gloves are provided by the TRTA. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nJoin the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) guides and partner Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) on a stroll from Brockway Summit on Highway 267 along the Tahoe Rim Trail to Picnic Rock with trained naturalists. The TRTA is the primary steward of the Tahoe Rim Trail system\, and TINS is a valuable ecological stewardship organization and community education provider. Together\, our organizations collaborate to provide educational experiences across the Tahoe Rim Trail and throughout the Basin. \nTINS naturalist Will Richardson leads the way in search of wildlife\, wildflowers\, and spectacular scenery along the Tahoe Rim Trail. Enjoy nature’s treasures before soaking up the great views of Lake Tahoe on the north shore. We will discuss natural history topics related to geology\, forest ecology\, birds\, and anything Nature in Tahoe! Bring your binoculars and inquisitive minds for this nature ramble with TRTA and TINS. Exact mileage will be determined by the group’s pace and interest in hiking over observing\, but will not exceed 4 miles during this event. The TRTA provides hard hats\, tools\, eye protection\, and gloves. After the ridge\, the trail descends through beautiful forest and crosses a couple of shallow creeks before arriving at the lovely\, granite-rimmed Dardanelles Lake. This out and back trail is considered moderately challenging and is 7.5 miles long roundtrip with 1300′ elevation gain. SUMMARY:Chickadee & Ski Nordic Tour at Chickadee Ridge with TINS
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nAh\, the “Cheese-bur-ger” bird; the call of the Sierra Nevada mountains. But where have all the mountain chickadees gone? What happens to your favorite birds in the winter? Did you know some birds stay here all winter long\, while others migrate south to warmer climates?  \nGlide through Tahoe’s winter wonderland on skis at a winter excursion hosted by TINS and the TRTA. We will take breaks periodically to learn about Tahoe’s forest ecology and bird migration habits while identifying trees and animals that live amongst the Lodgepole Pines. Please bring your own cross-country skis. Depending on the group\, we will travel 3-5 miles on a groomed trail by Nevada Nordic. We will go as fast as the slowest member of the group and can make adjustments along the way. Our route will not have steep hills. This tour is not for beginners and is appropriate for ages 16 and up – please only experienced skiers\, as equipment and coaching will not be provided. SUMMARY:Winter Wildlife Survival Snowshoe Hike with TINS

Spend the morning hiking amid high-elevation pine forests on Tahoe’s East Shore at Spooner Lake State Park. We will take breaks periodically to learn about Tahoe’s forest ecology while identifying trees and animals that live amongst the Lodgepole Pines. We will go as fast as the slowest member of the group and can make adjustments along the way. Our route will not have steep hills and stays at 7000′ elevation. This adventure will be a leisurely snowshoe from the Echo Lake Sno-Park (Johnson Pass Rd) to Lower Echo Lake (however\, it could be more challenging if snow levels are deep). Along the way\, our experts and friends at the Sugar Pine Foundation will reveal the mysterious world of trees in winter and touch on the effects of the Caldor Fire. Our destination provides great photo opportunities of Lower Echo Lake and the surrounding mountains of glacial moraine carved out millennia ago. \nWhat to Expect\nTRTA/SPF treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nJoin TINS naturalist Sarah Hockensmith as she leads the way in search of wildlife\, water features\, and spectacular scenery from a beachy waterfront. Enjoy nature’s treasures before soaking up the great views of Sugar Pine Point State Park on Tahoe’s West Shore (tentative location). Sarah will discuss natural history topics related to winter ecology\, including how various animals and plants cope with the short days\, heavy snow\, and freezing temperatures associated with winter in Tahoe. \nThis two-mile\, easy\, out-and-back trek is family-friendly and appropriate for ages 8 and up. If the trails are covered in snow\, TINS or the TRTA can provide snowshoes upon request. TINS can also provide binoculars by request.
