DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \n$225 TRTA Members\, $250 TRTA Non-Members\n  \nCourse Description\nJoin the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for an informative and experiential Backpacking101 course. You will learn tips and tricks to enjoy a night out in the true Tahoe backcountry\, and practice planning all the trip logistics from choosing a destination to building a food menu. We welcome new and seasoned backcountry enthusiasts eager to upgrade their wilderness experience by learning how to backpack for the first time or adding to your existing skills. \nStudents can expect an afternoon in the classroom\, followed by a weekend overnight hike in the field for hands-on practice and to experience genuine backcountry living. There is also a virtual ‘shakedown’ meeting the weeks before hitting the trail to go over people’s gear\, discuss any questions\, and allow time for adjustments. Much of the essential backpacking gear can be provided to borrow during this event for folks that don’t have their own equipment. \nThe classroom portion will provide concepts in trip planning\, Leave No Trace principles and bear safety\, critical gear needs and how to pack\, and how to thrive in outdoor environments while mitigating risk to yourself and others. The field portion of this course is not an endurance test but will consist of a 5-mile hike into a wilderness area where students will receive hands-on instruction in making a successful camp\, water treatment\, cooking\, travel\, how to use gear\, and how to do all of this while protecting the environment. Discover which plants emerge after a major wildfire and learn about the fascinating processes of primary and secondary succession. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDetails\n\nDescription\nJoin the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and 5 Gyres to collect and inspect trash along the waterfall trail at Van Sickle Bi-State Park! 5 Gyres is a non-profit known for its ocean expeditions and groundbreaking scientific research on ocean plastics. But\, the plastic crisis doesn’t stop at the ocean\, and they’ve set their sights on the Tahoe Basin for their first land-based scientific expedition. Come learn about the microplastics research that we are collaborating on this summer! We will also be joined by Keep Tahoe Blue\, who will share some of the latest on their work to prevent plastic pollution in Lake Tahoe.   \nAt this event\, we will use the TrashBlitz app to collect data on brands\, materials\, and items found along the trail. Although removing trash from an area has an immediate positive effect on the natural environment and human experience\, each piece of trash collected and inventoried with TrashBlitz will also contribute to local\, national\, and global datasets to help inform policy in the United States and around the world and hold corporate polluters accountable. In particular\, this data will contribute to a larger research project 5 Gyres is leading along the entire Tahoe Rim Trail this summer in collaboration with the TRTA. \n  \nHow to Prepare for the Event\nDownload the TrashBlitz App before the event! This four-day backcountry trail work experience takes place in Desolation Wilderness near Lake Aloha.\nSpend your days working on the trail you love\, your evenings camping among the stunning granite landscapes of the Sierra Nevada\, all while connecting with a passionate and welcoming trail community.\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][vc_text_separator title=”Lake Aloha Camp Info” color=”black” border_width=”2″ css=””][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nProject:\nAccess to Lake Aloha is challenging\, and this section of the Tahoe Rim Trail sees heavy use\, resulting in a cupped tread and areas of standing water. During this project\, we’ll use natural materials found near the trail to improve the trail surface\, enhance drainage\, and create a more sustainable route for hikers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nDifficulty:\nThis stewardship camp is for experienced backpackers\, preferably those who have spent time at high elevation as Lake Aloha is at 8\,118 feet elevation. Even with a boat taxi across both Echo Lakes\, the hike to base camp is ~5 miles and 1\,000ft ascent.
