SUMMARY:Desolation Wilderness Backcountry Camp August 28 - August 31\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_btn title=”Register Here!” color=”danger” size=”lg” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tfaforms.com%2F5069763|target:_blank”][vc_column_text]Join the TRTA as we reconstruct the PCT/TRT deep in Desolation Wilderness. Our work will focus on constructing stone steps and armoring drains to combat erosion near Dicks Lake.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=”9538″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space height=”10px”][vc_column_text] \nWhat to Expect\nThis Wilderness Backpacking Camp in Desolation Wilderness requires a 5.5-mile climb to the campsite while carrying all your gear\, food\, and supplies to camp out and work for four days. Bear-proof food storage\, such as a bear keg\, is required (bear hangs are not allowed). TRTA will provide bear canisters. This is an authentic wilderness camp\, and volunteers should have some backpacking experience. A short questionnaire will be required before participation can be confirmed. Meals will be provided but  prepared on personal backpacking stoves. This camp is rated Most Strenuous (but most rewarding!).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \nSchedule\nParticipants will meet the crew on Monday\, August 28\, at the TRTA office in Stateline\, NV\, and be shuttled to the Bayview trailhead near Emerald Bay at 6:45 am. Volunteers may meet the crew at Bayview TH at 7:45\, but overnight parking at the trailhead is NOT recommended due to recent bear activity (several cars have been damaged in the past few years) and a fee of $10.00. It is recommended that those meeting the crew at Bayview are dropped off/picked up. We’ll pack our gear 5.5 miles and over 1000 feet up to our camp location near Dicks Lake. We’ll camp out for three nights\, spending our days repairing eroded sections of the trail by installing and armoring drainage features and building stone steps. There will be plenty of time after work for exploration\, fishing\, swimming\, and enjoying the beauty of Desolation Wilderness. We’ll return to Bayview by the afternoon of Thursday\, August 31\, and shuttle the crew back to the TRTA office. There is a strict cap on the number of participants on this crew to respect the US Forest Service’s group size limit in Desolation Wilderness. \nPlease note! Our camp and worksite are at a high elevation\, approximately 8000 feet. If you will be traveling from low elevations or are not accustomed to strenuous activity at high elevation\, we recommend you arrive in the Tahoe area several days in advance to acclimate to local conditions. \nWhat to Bring\nAll volunteers must dress appropriately for each day of work\, including long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and sturdy\, closed-toe shoes. You should also bring everything you need for four days in the wilderness\, including lightweight camping and cooking gear\, warm clothes\, etc. Plan to bring containers for at least 3 liters of water\, sunglasses or other eye protection\, sunscreen\, medications\, and other personal items. Don’t have all the fancy stuff? Just let us know; we have the gear to loan out. The TRTA provides food (on request)\, safety equipment such as hard hats and gloves\, tools\, and experienced crew leaders. \nWho to Bring\nWilderness Backpacking Camps require previous backpacking experience\, preferably at altitude in the Sierra Nevada. This is not an appropriate opportunity for people looking to spend their first night in a tent. Minors aged 16+ are welcome so long as a parent or legal guardian accompanies them. Please fill out the Parent/Guardian Permission Form in such a case Parent/Guardian Permission Form. \n  \nCome out and help build some great trails!\n  \nThank you to our generous sponsors!\n  \n  \n                       [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Squawk Talk: Bird Trek with TINS
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nDetails\n\nDescription\nJoin TINS naturalist\, Sarah Hockensmith\, as she leads the way in search of birds in the fall to discuss and watch firsthand their physical characteristics and behavior. You’ll walk away from this trek with a better knowledge of what kinds of birds live and migrate through Tahoe\, the low-down on great birding destinations in the Tahoe Basin\, and some worthy photos. \nThis three-mile\, easy\, out-and-back trek is family-friendly and appropriate for ages 12 and up. \n  \nWhat to Expect\nTRTA/TINS treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together. SUMMARY:Expedition Echo Snowshoe Trek with Sugar Pine Foundation
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nThis event is full! No worries\, we have plenty of guided adventures to choose from. Click here to go back to the rest of our guided programs.\n  \nDescription\nThe Sugar Pine Foundation (SPF) and the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) have teamed up for a morning snowshoe trek to Echo Lake. This adventure will be a leisurely snowshoe from the Echo Lake Sno-Park (Johnson Pass Rd) to Lower Echo Lake (however\, it could be more challenging if snow levels are deep). Along the way\, our experts and friends at the Sugar Pine Foundation will reveal the mysterious world of trees and touch on the effects of the Caldor Fire. Our destination provides great photo opportunities of Lower Echo Lake and the surrounding mountains of glacial moraine carved out millennia ago. \nWhat to Expect\nTRTA/SPF treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together. Trip leaders dedicate a great deal of their time throughout the year\, sharing their passion for the outdoors. They are well-trained and experienced. Please respect the decisions made on the trail. \nCOVID-19 Policy\nDo not attempt to join if you have experienced any COVID-19 symptoms as outlined by the Center for Disease Control within 10 days of the trek: shortness of breath or difficulty breathing\, fever\, chills\, muscle pain\, sore throat\, loss of taste\, or smell. \nCost\nYour $10 reservation fee is non-refundable. Each vehicle must arrive with a Sno-Park parking permit to park at the meeting location. SUMMARY:Winter Navigation with a Map and Compass '24
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nAre You Ready to Find Yourself in Winter?\n$75- TRTA Members\, $100- TRTA Non-Members\n\nCourse Description\nJoin the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for a day in the classroom and field to learn basic map and compass skills in the winter. This course will teach you one of the most basic and essential outdoor skills- navigation without relying on a battery. Students can expect a morning in the classroom and then hitting the outdoors for hands-on practice. Objectives include map nomenclature and meaning of contour lines\, compass basics\, and orienteering to find one’s position with field practice. \nKnowing how to use a map and compass will greatly reduce your chances of getting lost\, especially in the winter when you can’t see the trail. Maps have stood the test of time and are still pertinent today. The Babylonians created and used one of the oldest surviving maps to this day\, and the Chinese Han Dynasty used magnetic compasses as early as 206 BC. The birth of the smartphone and personal global positioning systems (GPS) have not outdated the centuries-old navigation skill by map and compass. The earth’s magnetic field will never run out of battery. \nCOVID-19 Policy\nDo not attempt to join if you have experienced any COVID-19 symptoms as outlined by the Center for Disease Control within 10 days of the course: shortness of breath or difficulty breathing\, fever\, chills\, muscle pain\, sore throat\, loss of taste\, or smell. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \n\nCourse Information\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_btn title=”Student Logistics” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1gpaOIwyIOyQcNy6R-Sb_PuN_hT7uR85C%2Fedit%3Fusp%3Dsharing%26ouid%3D104583984495866880553%26rtpof%3Dtrue%26sd%3Dtrue|target:_blank”][vc_column_text] \nCancelation Policy\, Local Weather\, Lodging Options \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_btn title=”Register Today!” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ftahoerimtrail.my.salesforce-sites.com%2FCnP_PaaS_EVT__ExternalRegistrationPage%3Fevent_id%3Da24Un0000005MmIIAU|target:_blank”][vc_column_text] \nSecure your spot! \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text] \n\nCourse Discount\n[/vc_column_text][vc_cta h2=”TRTA Membership” h4=”Click below to become a member or renew your membership today.” txt_align=”center” add_button=”bottom” btn_title=”Support the TRTA” btn_style=”custom” btn_custom_background=”#ff6659″ btn_custom_text=”#ffffff” btn_align=”center” btn_link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fconnect.clickandpledge.com%2Fw%2FForm%2Fec4c7ed3-2cc3-4b7d-a315-e3e3fb3b34a5|target:_blank”][/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nTechnology like a personal GPS device has probably surpassed John Muir’s wildest dreams but that doesn’t mean Muir’s method of navigation is obsolete. If the trails are covered in snow\, TINS or the TRTA can provide snowshoes upon request. TINS can also provide binoculars by request. Please bring some snacks\, as we will enjoy a lakeside picnic at tables near the Ehrman Mansion. \nWhat to Expect\nTRTA/TINS treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together. All trek leaders dedicate a great deal of their time throughout the year\, sharing their passion for the outdoors. They are well-trained and experienced.
