DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nJoin the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) guides and partner Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) on a stroll from Brockway Summit on Highway 267 along the Tahoe Rim Trail to Picnic Rock with trained naturalists. The TRTA is the primary steward of the Tahoe Rim Trail system\, and TINS is a valuable ecological stewardship organization and community education provider. Together\, our organizations collaborate to provide educational experiences across the Tahoe Rim Trail and throughout the Basin. \nTINS naturalist Will Richardson leads the way in search of wildlife\, wildflowers\, and spectacular scenery along the Tahoe Rim Trail. Enjoy nature’s treasures before soaking up the great views of Lake Tahoe on the north shore. We will discuss natural history topics related to geology\, forest ecology\, birds\, and anything Nature in Tahoe! Bring your binoculars and inquisitive minds for this nature ramble with TRTA and TINS. Exact mileage will be determined by the group’s pace and interest in hiking over observing\, but will not exceed 4 miles during this event. After the ridge\, the trail descends through beautiful forest and crosses a couple of shallow creeks before arriving at the lovely\, granite-rimmed Dardanelles Lake. This out and back trail is considered moderately challenging and is 7.5 miles long roundtrip with 1300′ elevation gain. SUMMARY:Chickadee & Ski Nordic Tour at Chickadee Ridge with TINS
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nAh\, the “Cheese-bur-ger” bird; the call of the Sierra Nevada mountains. But where have all the mountain chickadees gone? What happens to your favorite birds in the winter? Did you know some birds stay here all winter long\, while others migrate south to warmer climates?  \nGlide through Tahoe’s winter wonderland on skis at a winter excursion hosted by TINS and the TRTA. We will take breaks periodically to learn about Tahoe’s forest ecology and bird migration habits while identifying trees and animals that live amongst the Lodgepole Pines. Please bring your own cross-country skis. Depending on the group\, we will travel 3-5 miles on a groomed trail by Nevada Nordic. We will go as fast as the slowest member of the group and can make adjustments along the way. Our route will not have steep hills. This tour is not for beginners and is appropriate for ages 16 and up – please only experienced skiers\, as equipment and coaching will not be provided. SUMMARY:Winter Wildlife Survival Snowshoe Hike with TINS
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nJoin us for a snowshoe excursion and educational session hosted by TINS and the TRTA. Spend the morning hiking amid high-elevation pine forests on Tahoe’s East Shore at Spooner Lake State Park. We will take breaks periodically to learn about Tahoe’s forest ecology while identifying trees and animals that live amongst the Lodgepole Pines. We will go as fast as the slowest member of the group and can make adjustments along the way. Our route will not have steep hills and stays at 7000′ elevation. Enjoy nature’s treasures before soaking up the great views of Sugar Pine Point State Park on Tahoe’s West Shore (tentative location). Sarah will discuss natural history topics related to winter ecology\, including how various animals and plants cope with the short days\, heavy snow\, and freezing temperatures associated with winter in Tahoe. \nThis two-mile\, easy\, out-and-back trek is family-friendly and appropriate for ages 8 and up. This course provides individuals with a foundation in important first-aid concepts critical to responding effectively to emergencies in a remote backcountry environment. \nThis fast-paced\, hands-on training is designed to meet the needs of trip leaders\, camp staff\, outdoor enthusiasts\, and individuals working in remote locations. It will introduce you to caring for people who become ill or injured far from definitive medical care. Classroom lectures and demonstrations are combined with realistic scenarios where mock patients will challenge you to integrate your learning. At the end of the course\, you’ll have the knowledge\, skills\, and ability to make sound decisions in emergencies. \nThis course may also be used to recertify NOLS Wilderness Medicine Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and NOLS Wilderness Medicine WEMT (wilderness portion only) certifications. \nClose physical contact is an inherent part of this course. Vaccines\, boosters\, and negative tests are not required to attend this course but all students are encouraged to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and up-to-date with any boosters they are eligible to receive. This year’s project focuses on the new highway crossing reroute at Big Meadow Trailhead- a key improvement for a safer\, more enjoyable trail experience. \nWhy It Matters \nTrails don’t maintain themselves—it takes a community. In partnership with American Hiking Society\, we’re uniting with tens of thousands of outdoor enthusiasts\, trail groups\, public agencies\, and local businesses to maintain\, protect\, and celebrate our public lands. \nWhat to Expect \n    Morning:\n– Meet in Meyers and shuttle to the Big Meadow Trailhead\n– Morning welcome and Trailhead Debrief \nMidday:\n– Walk to the worksite and dive into trail work together.\n– No prior experience needed! \nAfternoon:\n– We’ll wrap up and shuttle back to The Divided Sky for a well-earned celebration with appetizers and drinks provided by our generous hosts. \nBe Part of the Movement \nWhether you hike\, bike\, ride\, or simply love the outdoors\, this is your chance to give back. SUMMARY:Brockway Summit Trail Workday
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=””] \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workday will focus on trail drainage work and reshaping of the trail tread to improve water flow. This work is necessary to improve watershed health\, trail sustainability\, and user experience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nWhen: 9:00am-4:00pm \n  \nDifficulty: Moderately Strenuous \nExpect up to a 6-mile roundtrip hike with both uphill and downhill sections\, uneven terrain\, and the possibility of carrying tools or supplies weighing up to 25 lbs. Be prepared to get dirty as you contribute to maintaining these beautiful trails.
