SUMMARY:The Wonders of Wildlife and Water with TINS
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nJoin TINS naturalist Sarah Hockensmith as she leads the way in search of wildlife\, water features\, and spectacular scenery from a beachy waterfront. Enjoy nature’s treasures before soaking up the great views of Sugar Pine Point State Park on Tahoe’s West Shore (tentative location). Sarah will discuss natural history topics related to winter ecology\, including how various animals and plants cope with the short days\, heavy snow\, and freezing temperatures associated with winter in Tahoe. \nThis two-mile\, easy\, out-and-back trek is family-friendly and appropriate for ages 8 and up. If the trails are covered in snow\, TINS or the TRTA can provide snowshoes upon request. TINS can also provide binoculars by request. Please bring some snacks\, as we will enjoy a lakeside picnic at tables near the lakeshore. \nWhat to Expect\nTRTA/TINS treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together. All trek leaders dedicate a great deal of their time throughout the year\, sharing their passion for the outdoors. They are well-trained and experienced. SUMMARY:Wilderness First Aid with NOLS Wilderness Medicine- April 2025
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nCourse Description\nThe Tahoe Rim Trail Association is hosting a two-day Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course taught by NOLS Wilderness Medicine (NOLS WMI). This course provides individuals with a foundation in important first-aid concepts critical to responding effectively to emergencies in a remote backcountry environment. \nThis fast-paced\, hands-on training is designed to meet the needs of trip leaders\, camp staff\, outdoor enthusiasts\, and individuals working in remote locations. It will introduce you to caring for people who become ill or injured far from definitive medical care. Classroom lectures and demonstrations are combined with realistic scenarios where mock patients will challenge you to integrate your learning. At the end of the course\, you’ll have the knowledge\, skills\, and ability to make sound decisions in emergencies. \nThis course may also be used to recertify NOLS Wilderness Medicine Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and NOLS Wilderness Medicine WEMT (wilderness portion only) certifications. \nClose physical contact is an inherent part of this course. Vaccines\, boosters\, and negative tests are not required to attend this course but all students are encouraged to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and up-to-date with any boosters they are eligible to receive. Standard PPE will continue to be used in scenarios. \nPlease see the NOLS WM COVID-19 Disclosure for more information.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \n\nCourse Information\n[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner gap=”20″][vc_column_inner el_class=”box” width=”1/3″ css=”.vc_custom_1637203024713{margin: 20px !important;padding: 20px !important;background-color: #efefef !important;border: 2px solid #dd9933 !important;}”][vc_btn title=”Course Overview” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css_animation=”none” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F10dcdizEAlgI1xdOI6HvMlZUvAF2slZBsub08nHxWmSQ%2Fedit|target:_blank”][vc_column_text] \nCurriculum\, Student Agreement\, Certification\, Scholarships\, etc. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ css=”.vc_custom_1637097974661{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #efefef !important;}”][vc_btn title=”Waitlist Me!” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css_animation=”none” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tfaforms.com%2F5155416|target:_blank”][vc_column_text css=””] \nSold out! SUMMARY:Wilderness First Aid with NOLS Wilderness Medicine- May
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nCourse Description\nThe Tahoe Rim Trail Association is hosting a two-day Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course taught by NOLS Wilderness Medicine (NOLS WM). \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ css=”.vc_custom_1637097974661{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #efefef !important;}”][vc_btn title=”Register Today!” style=”classic” color=”primary” size=”lg” align=”center” css_animation=”none” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ftahoerimtrail.my.salesforce-sites.com%2FCnP_PaaS_EVT__ExternalRegistrationPage%3Fevent_id%3Da24Un000004gQ2DIAU%26|target:_blank”][vc_column_text css=””] \nLock in your spot today! \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ css=”.vc_custom_1637097893218{background-color: #efefef !important;}”][vc_btn title=”Student Logistics” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css_animation=”none” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1_ZFbnmdAkWM6rN9NAv2OfKUZvKwWscjX%2Fedit|target:_blank”][vc_column_text] \nCancelation Policy\, Course Location\, Local Weather\, Lodging Options\, etc. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text] \n\nCourse Discounts\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_cta h2=”TRTA Membership Discount” h4=”Active TRTA Members get 10% off! SUMMARY:Backpacking 101
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \n$225 TRTA Members\, $250 TRTA Non-Members\n  \nCourse Description\nJoin the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for an informative and experiential Backpacking101 course. You will learn tips and tricks to enjoy a night out in the true Tahoe backcountry\, and practice planning all the trip logistics from choosing a destination to building a food menu. We welcome new and seasoned backcountry enthusiasts eager to upgrade their wilderness experience by learning how to backpack for the first time or adding to your existing skills. \nStudents can expect an afternoon in the classroom\, followed by a weekend overnight hike in the field for hands-on practice and to experience genuine backcountry living. There is also a virtual ‘shakedown’ meeting the weeks before hitting the trail to go over people’s gear\, discuss any questions\, and allow time for adjustments. Much of the essential backpacking gear can be provided to borrow during this event for folks that don’t have their own equipment. \nThe classroom portion will provide concepts in trip planning\, Leave No Trace principles and bear safety\, critical gear needs and how to pack\, and how to thrive in outdoor environments while mitigating risk to yourself and others. The field portion of this course is not an endurance test but will consist of a 5-mile hike into a wilderness area where students will receive hands-on instruction in making a successful camp\, water treatment\, cooking\, travel\, how to use gear\, and how to do all of this while protecting the environment. Our goal is for students to walk away from the course with new and additional skills\, knowledge\, and confidence to enjoy a backcountry adventure solo or with family and friends. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n\nCourse Information\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_btn title=”Itinerary and Topics” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1Az4aOiDqpjKVtAsPJmkAyeHszwrw020d%2Fedit|target:_blank”][vc_column_text] \nDaily Topics\, Schedule \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_btn title=”Register Here!” style=”custom” custom_background=”#ff6659″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ftahoerimtrail.my.salesforce-sites.com%2FCnP_PaaS_EVT__ExternalRegistrationPage%3Fevent_id%3Da24Un000004A8TSIA0%26|target:_blank”][vc_column_text] \nSecure your spot! \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_btn title=”Student Logistics” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1qHlIDOnVGE-gJGrQuuCu64837FYvWKZU%2Fedit|target:_blank”][vc_column_text] \nCancellation Policy\, Local Weather\, Lodging Options \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column][vc_cta h2=”TRTA Membership Discount” h4=”Active TRTA Members get 10% off! SUMMARY:White Pine Hike with SPF
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDetails\n \nDescription\nThe Sugar Pine Foundation (SPF) is a local nonprofit dedicated to restoring native pine forests in the Tahoe Region and beyond. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) serves as the primary steward of the Tahoe Rim Trail System\, ensuring its protection and accessibility. Together\, our organizations collaborate to offer engaging educational experiences along the Tahoe Rim Trail and throughout the Basin. \nCome meet the whitebark pine\, a keystone species of high-elevation forests known for its resilience and distinctive\, wind-shaped form called krummholz—crooked wood shaped by relentless alpine winds and snow. More than just a tree\, the whitebark pine is a pillar of mountain ecosystems: its roots stabilize rocky soils\, its canopies shade snowpack and prolong snowmelt\, and its large nutritious seeds feed wildlife from Clark’s nutcrackers to grizzly bears. \nYet\, this remarkable pine faces grave threats. An introduced fungus\, white pine blister rust\, along with bark beetles and the pressures of a warming climate\, have decimated populations across much of its range\, leading to its federal listing as a threatened species in 2022. The Tahoe region now stands as a vital stronghold for this majestic tree\, where efforts are underway to identify and propagate individuals with natural resistance to disease. \nJoin naturalist Sarah Green to learn about the Sugar Pine Foundation’s work to protect and restore whitebark pine. She will guide us along the Tahoe Rim Trail\, where you can see these iconic trees—some gnarled and wind-sculpted\, others standing tall—while discovering how you can help ensure their survival for generations to come. \nCome hike in the woods with us\, enjoy beautiful views of Lake Tahoe and learn about forest ecology along the way! \nWhat to Expect\nFor the weather forecast in this area\, check out this link to the NOAA website. \nTRTA/SPF treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together. All TRTA guides and SPF staff dedicate a great deal of their time throughout the year sharing their passion for the outdoors. They are well-trained and experienced. Please respect the decisions made on the trail. \nIt is also critical that you sign up for a trek that is appropriate for you and your skill set. This request is for the safety of you\, the group\, and our leadership. Read the trek description carefully\, and sign up for treks that you are capable of participating in and can enjoy.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \n\n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nDifficulty\nModerate \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nDistance\n3 miles roundtrip \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text] \nLocation\nBarker Pass Trailhead[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text] \nTime\n9:00 am to ~12:00 pm \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \n\nWhat to Bring\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text] \n\n\n\nWater (~one liter per person)\nSnacks\nWindbreaker/ warm jacket\nClosed-toed shoes\nTrekking poles (optional)\nLip Balm (≥ SPF 15+)\nSunscreen\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text] \n\n\n\nSunglasses\nHat\nField guide (optional)\nBinoculars (optional)\nCamera (optional)\nPersonal Medications/Epi-Pen*\n*Communicate any medical issues in a private conversation with your guides at the trailhead.\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n\n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””] \nFor more information about the hike\, contact fionap@tahoerimtrail.org.\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”55px”][vc_column_text css=””] \nPlease click the button below to register.\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register!” color=”primary” size=”lg” align=”center” css_animation=”fadeIn” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ftahoerimtrail.my.salesforce-sites.com%2F%2FCnP_PaaS_EVT__ExternalRegistrationPage%3Fevent_id%3Da24Un000005ZZeMIAW%26|target:_blank”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text] \n \n \n \nCheck out more about our wonderful partners at:\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
