SUMMARY:Western White Pines Hike with SPF
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDetails\n\nDescription\nThe Sugar Pine Foundation (SPF) is a local nonprofit dedicated to restoring native pine forests in the Tahoe Region and beyond. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) serves as the primary steward of the Tahoe Rim Trail System\, ensuring its protection and accessibility. Together\, our organizations collaborate to offer engaging educational experiences along the Tahoe Rim Trail and throughout the Basin. \nCome meet the western white pine—a towering emblem of the American West\, distinguished by its soft needles and stately presence. This remarkable tree is more than just a forest giant; it’s a resilient survivor\, facing threats from logging\, urban development\, and the challenges of a changing climate. An introduced fungus has devastated many western white pines west of the Cascades\, making Tahoe a vital stronghold for this majestic species. \nJoin a SPF tree specialist who will share the Sugar Pine Foundation’s efforts to protect and restore the western white pine. \nCome hike with us\, enjoy beautiful views of Carson Valley and deepen your understanding of forest ecology\, conservation\, and the enduring beauty of Tahoe’s white pines! \nWhat to Expect\nFor the weather forecast in this area\, check out this link to the NOAA website. \nTRTA/SPF treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together. All TRTA guides and SPF staff dedicate a great deal of their time throughout the year sharing their passion for the outdoors. They are well-trained and experienced. Please respect the decisions made on the trail. \nIt is also critical that you sign up for a trek that is appropriate for you and your skill set. This request is for the safety of you\, the group\, and our leadership. SUMMARY:Photo Snowshoe
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Description \nTake in the change from winter to spring and immerse yourself\, and your camera\, in the new season! Join our photo expert Sharell Katibah to learn the basics of nature photography and how to get the most out of your photos. Grab your camera (fancy or not\, smartphones work too!) and get on the trail with us to capture the seasonal transition through your own lens. This adventure will be a leisurely snowshoe from the Echo Lake Sno-Park (Johnson Pass Rd) to Lower Echo Lake (however\, it could be more challenging if snow levels are deep). If there’s enough snow\, the TRTA can provide you snowshoes and poles for no additional fee. \n  \nWhat to Expect \nFor the weather forecast in this area\, check out this link to the NOAA website. \nTRTA treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together. All TRTA guides dedicate a great deal of their time throughout the year sharing their passion for the outdoors. They are well-trained and experienced. Please respect the decisions made on the trail. \nIt is also critical that you sign up for a trek that is appropriate for you and your skill set. This request is for the safety of you\, the group\, and our leadership. Read the trek description carefully\, and sign up for treks that you are capable of participating in and can enjoy. \n  \nCost \nYour $10 reservation fee is non-refundable. Each vehicle must arrive with a Sno-Park parking permit to park at the meeting location. You can purchase a $15-day permit or $40 season permit online here or at several Sno-Park permit vendors found here.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nDifficulty\neasy-moderate \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nDistance\n~3 miles roundtrip \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nLocation\nEcho Lake Sno Park[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nTime\n9:00 AM to 12:00 PM \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]What to Bring \n\nWater (~one liter per person)\nSnacks\nInsulating clothes – we suggest a wicking layer to go against your skin\nWarm fleece-type layer\nWindbreaker/ warm jacket\nWaterproof pants\nExtra layers\nWinter hat and gloves\nAppropriate footwear\nExtra pair of dry socks\nSnowshoes (can be borrowed from TRTA)\nTrekking poles (can be borrowed from TRTA)\nLip Balm (≥ SPF 15+)\nSunscreen\nSunglasses\nCamera (smart phones are welcome!)\nPersonal Medications/Epi-Pen*\n\n*Communicate any medical issues in a private conversation with your guides at the trailhead.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_btn title=”Register now!” color=”primary” align=”left” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ftahoerimtrail.my.salesforce-sites.com%2F%2FCnP_PaaS_EVT__ExternalRegistrationPage%3Fevent_id%3Da24Un000008iYZFIA2%26|target:_blank”][vc_column_text css=””]Leave No Trace \nWe practice the seven Leave No Trace (LNT) principles on each of our programs. SUMMARY:Disconnect from Tech Nordic Ski with TINS
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nDo you feel too attached to your phone? Does constant internet connection leave you exhausted? If so\, maybe it’s time to disconnect from tech and plug in to the natural world. Join TINS and the TRTA for a guided cross-country ski focused on being present in nature without the distraction of technology. TINS naturalist Sarah Hockensmith will lead you through mindfulness activities as you ski along beautiful Tahoe Meadows. Participants are encouraged to leave their phone off or on airplane mode if circumstances allow. \nCross country skis and experience are required–the TRTA does not provide skis and guides are not ski instructors. We will travel ~5 miles on a groomed trail by Nevada Nordic. We will go as fast as the slowest member of the group and can make adjustments along the way. Our route does include some climbing. Sorry\, no snowshoers on this adventure\, but take a look at our Events Calendar for other opportunities. \nWhat to Expect\nTRTA/TINS treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together. SUMMARY:Snow Camping 101
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nAre You Ready For Your Winter Adventure?\n$225- TRTA Members\, $250- TRTA Non-Members\n\nCourse Description\nJoin the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for Snow Camping 101\, where you will learn tips and tricks to enjoy a night out in the snowy backcountry. We welcome new and seasoned backcountry enthusiasts eager to add another season to their camping experiences by learning the skills to camp successfully in the snow. \nThis course includes a virtual classroom session before the weekend in-person fieldtrip. This course is designed to give students a basis for their winter adventures through classroom and field instruction. \nThe virtual classroom portion is conducted by your instructors and will provide concepts in trip planning\, winter Leave No Trace principles\, cooking in wintery conditions\, critical gear needs\, and staying warm in harsher environments. \nThe field portion of this course is not an endurance test but will consist of a short snowshoe hike into a training area where students will sleep overnight and receive hands-on instruction in making a successful camp and how to use common gear while camping and traveling in the snow. We aim for students to walk away from the course with the additional skills\, knowledge\, and confidence to enjoy a wintry backcountry adventure solo or with family and friends. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \n\nCourse Information\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_btn title=”Itinerary and Topics” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F10n_CI-VyvMjJNL9ygRH3qiYiBePlC-Xx%2Fedit%3Fusp%3Dsharing%26ouid%3D104583984495866880553%26rtpof%3Dtrue%26sd%3Dtrue|target:_blank”][vc_column_text] \nDaily Topics\, Schedule\, Contingency Dates \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_btn title=”Registration opens 12/3/25!” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ftahoerimtrail.my.salesforce-sites.com%2F%2FCnP_PaaS_EVT__ExternalRegistrationPage%3Fevent_id%3Da24Un0000072EfZIAU|target:_blank”][vc_column_text] \nSecure your spot! \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_btn title=”Student Logistics” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1VFfj1Xvy6-JhEHLgSBNg1gnZ2Q4hwei0%2Fedit%3Fusp%3Dsharing%26ouid%3D104583984495866880553%26rtpof%3Dtrue%26sd%3Dtrue|target:_blank”][vc_column_text css=””] \nCancellation Policy\, Local Weather\, Lodging Options \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text] \n\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_cta h2=”TRTA Membership” h4=”Click below to become a member or renew your membership today.” txt_align=”center” add_button=”bottom” btn_title=”Support the TRTA” btn_style=”custom” btn_custom_background=”#ff6659″ btn_custom_text=”#ffffff” btn_align=”center” css=”” btn_link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fconnect.clickandpledge.com%2Fw%2FForm%2Fec4c7ed3-2cc3-4b7d-a315-e3e3fb3b34a5|target:_blank”]The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) is a nonprofit whose mission is to maintain and enhance the Tahoe Rim Trail system\, practice and inspire stewardship\, and preserve access to the natural beauty of the Lake Tahoe region. Sarah will discuss natural history topics related to winter ecology\, including how various animals and plants cope with the short days\, heavy snow\, and freezing temperatures associated with winter in Tahoe. \nThis two-mile\, easy\, out-and-back trek is family-friendly and appropriate for ages 8 and up. If the trails are covered in snow\, TINS or the TRTA can provide snowshoes upon request. TINS can also provide binoculars by request. Please bring some snacks\, as we will enjoy a lakeside picnic at tables near the lakeshore. \nWhat to Expect\nTRTA/TINS treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together. SUMMARY:Winter Wildlife Nordic Ski with TINS
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nGlide through Tahoe’s winter wonderland on skis for a winter excursion hosted by TINS and the TRTA. We will take breaks periodically to learn about Tahoe’s forest ecology and bird migration habits while identifying trees and animals that live amongst the Lodgepole Pines. \nCross country skis and experience are required–the TRTA does not provide skis and guides are not ski instructors. We will travel ~3 miles on a groomed trail by Nevada Nordic. We will go as fast as the slowest member of the group and can make adjustments along the way. Our route will not have steep hills. SUMMARY:Autumn Exploration Series with TINS: Changes at Page Meadows
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDescription\nJoin the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) guides and nonprofit partner Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) for a scenic October hike to Page Meadows\, one of Tahoe City’s most stunning locations to witness the magic of fall. As the seasons change\, so does the landscape and the wildlife that call it home. \nTogether\, we’ll search for signs of animals preparing for winter: caching food\, migrating south\, or bulking up for hibernation. Along the way\, we’ll be immersed in the golden glow of Quaking Aspens as their leaves turn from green to brilliant shades of orange and yellow. Keep your eyes open as we may even spot bear scratches on tree trunks or other subtle clues of wildlife activity. \nThis hike is perfect for nature lovers\, photographers\, and anyone curious about the rhythms of the natural world as it shifts into autumn. \nWhat to Expect\nFor the weather forecast in this area\, check out this link to the NOAA website. \nTRTA/TINS treks are group treks\, and we do our best to keep the group together. All TRTA guides and TINS staff dedicate a great deal of their time throughout the year sharing their passion for the outdoors. They are well-trained and experienced. SUMMARY:White Pine Hike with SPF
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDetails\n \nDescription\nThe Sugar Pine Foundation (SPF) is a local nonprofit dedicated to restoring native pine forests in the Tahoe Region and beyond. \nCome meet the whitebark pine\, a keystone species of high-elevation forests known for its resilience and distinctive\, wind-shaped form called krummholz—crooked wood shaped by relentless alpine winds and snow. More than just a tree\, the whitebark pine is a pillar of mountain ecosystems: its roots stabilize rocky soils\, its canopies shade snowpack and prolong snowmelt\, and its large nutritious seeds feed wildlife from Clark’s nutcrackers to grizzly bears. \nYet\, this remarkable pine faces grave threats. An introduced fungus\, white pine blister rust\, along with bark beetles and the pressures of a warming climate\, have decimated populations across much of its range\, leading to its federal listing as a threatened species in 2022. The Tahoe region now stands as a vital stronghold for this majestic tree\, where efforts are underway to identify and propagate individuals with natural resistance to disease. \nJoin naturalist Sarah Green to learn about the Sugar Pine Foundation’s work to protect and restore whitebark pine. She will guide us along the Tahoe Rim Trail\, where you can see these iconic trees—some gnarled and wind-sculpted\, others standing tall—while discovering how you can help ensure their survival for generations to come. \nCome hike in the woods with us\, enjoy beautiful views of Lake Tahoe and learn about forest ecology along the way! Read the trek description carefully\, and sign up for treks that you are capable of participating in and can enjoy.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \n\n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nDifficulty\nModerate \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nDistance\n3 miles roundtrip \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text] \nLocation\nBarker Pass Trailhead[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text] \nTime\n9:00 am to ~12:00 pm \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \n\nWhat to Bring\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text] \n\n\n\nWater (~one liter per person)\nSnacks\nWindbreaker/ warm jacket\nClosed-toed shoes\nTrekking poles (optional)\nLip Balm (≥ SPF 15+)\nSunscreen\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text] \n\n\n\nSunglasses\nHat\nField guide (optional)\nBinoculars (optional)\nCamera (optional)\nPersonal Medications/Epi-Pen*\n*Communicate any medical issues in a private conversation with your guides at the trailhead.\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n\n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””] \nFor more information about the hike\, contact fionap@tahoerimtrail.org.\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”55px”][vc_column_text css=””] \nPlease click the button below to register.\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register!” color=”primary” size=”lg” align=”center” css_animation=”fadeIn” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ftahoerimtrail.my.salesforce-sites.com%2F%2FCnP_PaaS_EVT__ExternalRegistrationPage%3Fevent_id%3Da24Un000005ZZeMIAW%26|target:_blank”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text] \n \n \n \nCheck out more about our wonderful partners at:\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
