SUMMARY:Backpacking 101
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \n$225 TRTA Members\, $250 TRTA Non-Members\n  \nCourse Description\nJoin the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for an informative and experiential Backpacking101 course. You will learn tips and tricks to enjoy a night out in the true Tahoe backcountry\, and practice planning all the trip logistics from choosing a destination to building a food menu. We welcome new and seasoned backcountry enthusiasts eager to upgrade their wilderness experience by learning how to backpack for the first time or adding to your existing skills. \nStudents can expect an afternoon in the classroom\, followed by a weekend overnight hike in the field for hands-on practice and to experience genuine backcountry living. There is also a virtual ‘shakedown’ meeting the weeks before hitting the trail to go over people’s gear\, discuss any questions\, and allow time for adjustments. Much of the essential backpacking gear can be provided to borrow during this event for folks that don’t have their own equipment. \nThe classroom portion will provide concepts in trip planning\, Leave No Trace principles and bear safety\, critical gear needs and how to pack\, and how to thrive in outdoor environments while mitigating risk to yourself and others. The field portion of this course is not an endurance test but will consist of a 5-mile hike into a wilderness area where students will receive hands-on instruction in making a successful camp\, water treatment\, cooking\, travel\, how to use gear\, and how to do all of this while protecting the environment. Our goal is for students to walk away from the course with new and additional skills\, knowledge\, and confidence to enjoy a backcountry adventure solo or with family and friends. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nCourse Information\n\nMonday\, June 15\, 6 PM – 8 PM: Virtual Meeting\nFriday\, June 26\, 12 PM – 5 PM: Classroom at TRTA Office\nSaturday\, June 27 – Sunday\, June 28: Overnight Backpacking Trip along the TRT\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_btn title=”Register now!” style=”custom” custom_background=”#1E73BE” custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ftahoerimtrail.my.salesforce-sites.com%2F%2FCnP_PaaS_EVT__ExternalRegistrationPage%3Fevent_id%3Da24Un000009AsgHIAS%26|target:_blank”][vc_column_text] \nSecure your spot! \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][vc_column][vc_cta h2=”TRTA Membership Discount” h4=”Active TRTA Members get 10% off!
\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n\nCourse Information\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_btn title=”Itinerary and Topics” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1Az4aOiDqpjKVtAsPJmkAyeHszwrw020d%2Fedit|target:_blank”][vc_column_text] \nDaily Topics\, Schedule \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_btn title=”Register Here!” style=”custom” custom_background=”#ff6659″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ftahoerimtrail.my.salesforce-sites.com%2FCnP_PaaS_EVT__ExternalRegistrationPage%3Fevent_id%3Da24Un000004A8TSIA0%26|target:_blank”][vc_column_text] \nSecure your spot! \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_btn title=”Student Logistics” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1qHlIDOnVGE-gJGrQuuCu64837FYvWKZU%2Fedit|target:_blank”][vc_column_text] \nCancellation Policy\, Local Weather\, Lodging Options \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column][vc_cta h2=”TRTA Membership Discount” h4=”Active TRTA Members get 10% off! SUMMARY:Winter Navigation with a Map and Compass
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nAre You Ready to Find Yourself in Winter?\n$100 TRTA Members ; $110 TRTA Non-Members\n\nCourse Description\nJoin the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for a day in the classroom and field to learn basic map and compass skills in the winter. This course will teach you one of the most basic and essential outdoor skills- navigation without relying on a battery. Students can expect a morning in the classroom and then hitting the outdoors for hands-on practice. Objectives include map nomenclature and meaning of contour lines\, compass basics\, and orienteering to find one’s position with field practice. \nKnowing how to use a map and compass will greatly reduce your chances of getting lost\, especially in the winter when you can’t see the trail. Maps have stood the test of time and are still pertinent today. The Babylonians created and used one of the oldest surviving maps to this day\, and the Chinese Han Dynasty used magnetic compasses as early as 206 BC. The birth of the smartphone and personal global positioning systems (GPS) have not outdated the centuries-old navigation skill by map and compass. The earth’s magnetic field will never run out of battery. \nNEW! this year is a short introduction to modern navigation technologies like GPS\, how to use your phone to navigate\, some recommended favorite navigation Apps and programs\, and more!\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \n\nCourse Information\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_btn title=”Student Logistics” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1gpaOIwyIOyQcNy6R-Sb_PuN_hT7uR85C%2Fedit|target:_blank”][vc_column_text css=””] \nCancellation Policy\, Local Weather\, Lodging Options \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”custom” custom_background=”#0093d6″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ftahoerimtrail.my.salesforce-sites.com%2FCnP_PaaS_EVT__ExternalRegistrationPage%3Fevent_id%3Da24Un000003FfKTIA0|target:_blank”][vc_column_text css=””] \nSecure your spot!\nTRTA Members get 10% off. Bear-proof food storage\, such as a bear keg\, is required (bear hangs are not allowed). TRTA will provide bear canisters. This is an authentic wilderness camp\, and volunteers should have some backpacking experience. A short questionnaire will be required before participation can be confirmed. Meals will be provided but  prepared on personal backpacking stoves. This camp is rated Most Strenuous (but most rewarding!).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \nSchedule\nParticipants will meet the crew on Monday\, August 28\, at the TRTA office in Stateline\, NV\, and be shuttled to the Bayview trailhead near Emerald Bay at 6:45 am. Volunteers may meet the crew at Bayview TH at 7:45\, but overnight parking at the trailhead is NOT recommended due to recent bear activity (several cars have been damaged in the past few years) and a fee of $10.00. It is recommended that those meeting the crew at Bayview are dropped off/picked up. We’ll pack our gear 5.5 miles and over 1000 feet up to our camp location near Dicks Lake. We’ll camp out for three nights\, spending our days repairing eroded sections of the trail by installing and armoring drainage features and building stone steps. There will be plenty of time after work for exploration\, fishing\, swimming\, and enjoying the beauty of Desolation Wilderness. We’ll return to Bayview by the afternoon of Thursday\, August 31\, and shuttle the crew back to the TRTA office. There is a strict cap on the number of participants on this crew to respect the US Forest Service’s group size limit in Desolation Wilderness. \nPlease note! Our camp and worksite are at a high elevation\, approximately 8000 feet. If you will be traveling from low elevations or are not accustomed to strenuous activity at high elevation\, we recommend you arrive in the Tahoe area several days in advance to acclimate to local conditions. \nWhat to Bring\nAll volunteers must dress appropriately for each day of work\, including long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and sturdy\, closed-toe shoes. You should also bring everything you need for four days in the wilderness\, including lightweight camping and cooking gear\, warm clothes\, etc. Plan to bring containers for at least 3 liters of water\, sunglasses or other eye protection\, sunscreen\, medications\, and other personal items. Don’t have all the fancy stuff? Just let us know; we have the gear to loan out. The TRTA provides food (on request)\, safety equipment such as hard hats and gloves\, tools\, and experienced crew leaders. \nWho to Bring\nWilderness Backpacking Camps require previous backpacking experience\, preferably at altitude in the Sierra Nevada. This is not an appropriate opportunity for people looking to spend their first night in a tent. Minors aged 16+ are welcome so long as a parent or legal guardian accompanies them. Please fill out the Parent/Guardian Permission Form in such a case Parent/Guardian Permission Form. \n  \nCome out and help build some great trails!\n  \nThank you to our generous sponsors!\n  \n  \n                       [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Bear-proof food storage\, such as a bear keg\, is required (bear hangs are not allowed). This is a true wilderness camp and volunteers should have some backpacking experience. A short questionnaire will be required before participation can be confirmed. Meals will be prepared on backpacking stoves. This camp is rated Most Strenuous (but most rewarding!).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \nRegistration for this camp is currently on hold due to complications from the COVID-19 pandemic. To be put on a notification list for updates on this camp\, please email your interest to KristineK@tahoerimtrail.org.\n\nSchedule\nA short questionnaire is required for participation. Please both register through the links on this page and return the questionnaire if you are interested in this camp. \nParticipants will meet the crew on Monday\, August 24th at the TRTA office in Stateline\, NV and be shuttled to the Bayview trailhead near Emerald Bay. Volunteers may meet the crew at Bayview\, but overnight parking at the trailhead is NOT recommended due to recent bear activity (several cars have been damaged in the past few years). It is recommended that those meeting the crew at Bayview are dropped off/picked up. We’ll pack our gear 5.5 miles and over 1000 feet up to our camp location near Middle Velma Lake. We’ll camp out for three nights\, spending our days repairing eroded sections of the trail by installing and armoring drainage features and building stone steps. There will be plenty of time after work for exploration\, fishing\, swimming\, and enjoying the beauty of Desolation Wilderness. We’ll return to Bayview by the afternoon of Thursday\, August 27th and shuttle the crew back to the TRTA office. There is a strict cap on the number of participants on this crew to respect the US Forest Service’s group size limit in Desolation Wilderness. \nPlease note! Our camp and work site are at high elevation\, approximately 8000 feet. If you will be traveling from low elevations or are not accustomed to strenuous activity at high elevation we recommend you arrive in the Tahoe area several days in advance to acclimate to local conditions. \nWhat to Bring\nAll volunteers are required to dress appropriately for each day of work including long sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and sturdy\, closed-toe shoes. You should also bring everything you will need for four days in the wilderness\, including lightweight camping and cooking gear\, warm clothes\, etc. Plan to bring containers for at least 3 liters of water\, sunglasses or other eye protection\, sunscreen\, any medications\, and other personal items. Don’t have the all the fancy stuff? Just let us know\, we have gear to loan out. Minors age 16+ are welcome so long as they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. In such a case\, please fill out the Parent/Guardian Permission Form. \n  \nCome out and help build some great trail!\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_btn title=”Register Here!” color=”danger” size=”lg” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tfaforms.com%2Frest%2Fforms%2Fview%2F4815145|||”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nThank you to the Tahoe Fund\, the Clif Bar Family Foundation\,\nand the Pacific Crest Trail Association for their generous support of this project!\n\n  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_single_image image=”7991″ img_size=”small”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_single_image image=”7983″ img_size=”small”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_single_image image=”3176″ img_size=”small”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_single_image image=”9585″ img_size=”small”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
