The TRTA is in the thick of a 5-year project to identify and mitigate risks from hazard trees along the Tahoe Rim Trail system. Hazard trees are dead, dying, diseased, or deformed trees that threaten to drop limbs or fall on trail facilities, points of congregation, or trail maintenance or construction sites. Starting in 2017, the TRTA began systematically assessing risks from trees on the entire 200-mile trail system, beginning with the trail in Nevada. The information is then passed on to sawyer crews working for the US Forest Service who mitigate the risks, primarily by cutting down the trees. Thanks to generous funding from the sponsors below, this year the TRTA began moving the hazard tree assessment and mitigation program forward on the trail in California.
