Trail Work in 2023-Looking Back on Success

As we close the equipment sheds, it’s time to reflect on our summer of hard work.

For any of the folks who lived through the Tahoe Winter of 2023, you may have firsthand knowledge of what the TRTA had to deal with, crushing snowstorm after crushing snowstorm. Many of you experienced mass power outages as the heavy snow broke through power lines. You were most likely high on your roof, shoveling snow off and staring at 10-foot-high snow berms that surrounded you. So, as you can imagine, our trails took some damage as well. Since these storms had no end in sight until early summer, the trail crews had a late start to access any problem areas due to snowfields and then later to flooded areas. Nevertheless, things got done, and the crews pushed through an unconventional season to create clear access for all trail users.

Throughout the last few years, there have been dozens of trail projects that have provided better access for all. You may have seen the newly built Big Meadow bridge, hundreds of huge trees sawn into parts and rolled off trail, new reroutes to ease access, along with many more projects. Here at the TRTA, there are TWO big Thank-You’s to give out. First is to a multi-year sponsor, American Trails, with their Legacy Trails Grant Program. This grant helped fund trail maintenance from Echo Lakes to Dicks Lake, and the entirety of the Bayview Connector Trail. The goal of this program is to support projects that restore, protect, and maintain watersheds in our national forests and grasslands. The Forest Service identifies and prioritizes watershed acres or areas where Forest Service roads and trails may impact water quality in streams and water bodies. With their help, we have successfully restored parts of our trails that the Tahoe Winter of 2023 destroyed. Secondly, our amazing volunteers who put in countless hours on the trails. There at the TRTA, we have firsthand seen our incredible volunteers hiking up our trail with heavy equipment in their hands and smiles on their faces. Without all the help we receive, trail users would not have access to these world-class trails around the Basin. The Tahoe Rim Trail is a beautiful trail, and without the restoration of these magical trails, we wouldn’t have access to the magic these trails give. We are looking forward to another incredible year of trail work and unforgettable memories on the Tahoe Rim Trail. So once again, thank you all!
