Description
The Sugar Pine Foundation (SPF) is a local non-profit organization dedicated to restoring the natural regeneration of white pines in the Tahoe Region and beyond. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) is the primary steward of the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) System. Together, our organizations partner to provide educational experiences across the Tahoe Rim Trail and throughout the Basin.
Come meet the western white pine, a towering emblem of the American West, boasting soft needles and a regal presence. It’s not just any tree—it’s a warrior battling threats from logging, urban sprawl, and climate woes, earning its status as a state concern. An introduced fungus has wiped out many of the western white pine west of the Cascades and Tahoe is a significant stronghold for this majestic species. Tree specialist Maria Mircheva will teach us about Sugar Pine Foundation’s efforts to protect this beautiful tree and will lead the group along the Tahoe Rim Trail to see some beautiful examples of this majestic pine.
Come hike in the woods with us and learn about forest ecology along the way!
What to Expect
TRTA outings are group outings, and we do our best to keep the group together. Trip leaders dedicate much of their time throughout the year, sharing their passion for the outdoors. They are well-trained and experienced. Please respect the decisions made on the trail.
