Regulations

  • Do not hitch, tether, or hobble a horse or other saddle pack animal within 200 feet of a water source or with 100 feet of a campsite.
  • In Desolation Wilderness (Echo Lake to Barker Pass) livestock is limited to two per person, or 12 livestock in one group.
  • Horses and stock are allowed on all sections of the trail EXCEPT between Relay Ridge and the Tahoe Meadows trailhead, including the Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Loop.  This section can be bypassed by utilizing Relay Peak Road (a dirt road closed to public vehicles) and Mt Rose Highway/Highway 431.

In 2019 three members of the living history group, 2nd California Cavalry Co. F, Sacramento Rangers (www.californiacavalry.com) set out on a thru-ride of the Tahoe Rim Trail.  They complied a document to help future riders who choose to tackle all or part of the TRT.
