In a bid to preserve the pristine beauty of the Lake Tahoe Basin and uphold responsible recreation, the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has introduced a pivotal Forest Order effective January 2024.This initiative aims to foster stewardship and ensure the well-being of the region’s iconic black bear, and the Tahoe Rim Trail Association is all for it:
“To help keep Tahoe bears wild, the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has issued a new Forest Order that requires the proper storage of food and refuse (garbage) on all National Forest System lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The Forest Order also requires the use of bear canisters (hard-sided bear-proof containers) for overnight visitors to the Desolation Wilderness and wildlife-resistant dumpsters and food lockers (bear boxes) provided at National Forest campgrounds.”

Body: 1. Protecting Tahoe’s Bears: The heart of this Forest Order lies in the commitment to preserving the natural behavior of Tahoe’s black bears. The USDA Forest Service recognizes the importance of maintaining the wildness of these creatures, and the new regulations are designed to minimize human-bear conflicts.
2. Mandatory Bear Canisters: Beginning January 2024, all outdoor enthusiasts venturing into Tahoe Basin National Forest land and the Desolation Wilderness are required to use bear canisters. These hard-sided, bear-proof containers serve as an effective means of securing food and refuse, preventing bears from accessing human provisions and deterring them from associating food with human presence.
3. Responsible Recreation in Desolation Wilderness: Overnight visitors to the Desolation Wilderness are now mandated to carry bear canisters as part of their essential gear. This not only safeguards their own provisions but contributes to the overall conservation of the wilderness area, promoting a harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.
4. Wildlife-Resistant Dumpsters and Food Lockers: For those staying at National Forest campgrounds, the Forest Order emphasizes the use of wildlife-resistant dumpsters and food lockers, commonly known as bear boxes. These secure storage options are strategically placed to ensure that bears do not develop a reliance on human food sources, maintaining the natural order of the ecosystem.
5. Tahoe Rim Trail Association’s Call to Action: We are hoping that all outdoor enthusiasts can understand the need for this decision, as the cohabitation within the Tahoe Basin must continue into the future. We encourage all trail users to play an active role in the preservation of Lake Tahoe’s unique ecosystem.
Here at the Tahoe Rim Trail Association, we invite everyone to embrace these changes as a collective effort to protect the region’s natural treasures. By adhering to the Forest Order, we can ensure the continued thriving of Tahoe’s black bears and contribute to the legacy of responsible recreation for generations to come.
