When To Join
Public workdays start in late May or Early June, weather dependent, and last until October 15! As always, we look forward to National Trails Day, which takes place on the first Saturday in June 2023. Our calendar for workday opportunities will return once registrations reopen. Registrations open on the first day of the previous month. For example, June registrations open May 1, July registrations open June 1, and so on.
What To Expect
Workdays generally run from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and no experience is necessary. Our trained crew leaders will meet you and the rest of the day’s volunteers at the trailhead and teach you everything you need to know about safety, tools, and trail maintenance and construction techniques. After hiking to the work site carrying tools and supplies you’ll work until lunch taking water and rest breaks as needed. Work varies widely depending on the project but can include cutting back vegetation, restoring eroded trails, constructing trail features, or digging sidehills. A few more hours of work after lunch and the crew will return to the trailhead and celebrate a job well done!
What To Bring
All volunteers will need to dress properly including long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. You should also bring at least 3 liters of water, lunch and snacks, sunglasses or other eye protection, sunscreen, and any medications or other supplies you’ll need. The TRTA provides the rest, including safety equipment such as hard hats and gloves, tools, and experienced crew leaders.
Who Can Come?
The whole family is welcome! Children can participate in volunteer workdays so long as they can understand and abide by TRTA safety precautions. Adults that bring youth participants are responsible for their supervision at all times. In addition, please follow the guidelines below:
Leave the dog at home. Unfortunately, we do not allow dogs at workdays because we are often swinging tools and other hazards exist.
Any volunteer under the age of 18 must have their legal guardian sign a Trail Work Guardian Permission Form.
Responsible volunteers age 16 and older can participate in trail work without an adult chaperone.
Volunteers over 12 years of age must have at least one adult for every 4-5 youth participants.
Volunteers under 12 years of age must have one adult for every youth participant.
