Public trail workdays, group workdays, and stewardship camps are great opportunities to learn new skills, connect with new friends, and make a meaningful impact on the trail system you love.
Check out the tabs and event calendar below to learn more about trail work volunteer opportunities.
Public trail workdays occur June – October. When they are scheduled, they will appear on the events calendar below.
When: 9:00am to 4:00pm
What: Crew Leaders will supply tools, safety equipment, and instruction. Work varies widely depending on the project, but can include cutting back vegetation, restoring eroded trail, constructing trail features, or digging trail sidehill.
Who: Enthusiastic people with or without trail work experience. Participation in workdays may require hiking one to six miles or more. Check out event details for specific physical and trail work experience requirements.
Not interested in swinging a McLeod but still want to join the efforts? Photographers are always welcome! Reach out to briegana@tahoerimtrail.org.
We love hosting group workdays and partnering with businesses, gyms, running clubs, and community organizations!
A group trail workday is a meaningful way to build camaraderie, give back to the trails you love, and spend a rewarding day outside together.
Our standard workday runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but we’re happy to explore other options to accommodate your group’s schedule.
To get started, email briegana@tahoerimtrail.org with:
-
Your estimated group size
-
Preferred work location (if you have one)
-
Any time constraints or scheduling needs
We look forward to planning a workday with your group!
Ready to get your hands dirty and be part of the tradition?
Join the TRTA for an unforgettable overnight stewardship camp working on the trails we love! For nearly 30 years, we’ve been hosting multi-day, overnight camps filled with camaraderie, great food,
sleeping under the stars, and the rewarding experience of giving back to the trail.
Take a mini volunteer vacation with us and choose from different camp formats:
- Frontcountry Camps – Accessible campsites where volunteers can drive in.
- Backcountry Camps – Adventure into remote locations, backpacking to worksites.
- Weekender Camps – Designed for weekend warriors who work Monday through Friday.
Each season, Tahoe Rim Trail Crew Leaders plan and lead trail construction, maintenance, and management projects. They oversee safety briefings, technical work, and volunteer teams, taking on more responsibility as they gain experience.
STEP ONE – Join Our Workdays!
The first step to becoming a TRTA Crew Leader is to join us at our regular volunteer workdays. Come out and get familiar with the TRTA trail building and maintenance program, meet and work with our Crew Leaders, learn basic trail building and maintenance techniques, and gain familiarity with our trail tools and procedures.
STEP TWO – Attend Crew Leader Training
Crew Leader Training is on May 30 & 31st, 2026. For more information and to sign up CLICK HERE.
STEP THREE – Lead Crews and Build Your Skills
Sky is the limit! Alongside staff, crew leaders can plan projects, lead workdays, attend and offer trainings, attend Trail Committee Meetings, gain skills, and responsibility!
Because, unfortunately, trail fairies are not real…
As the primary stewards of the Tahoe Rim Trail and many of its connecting trails, caring for over 200 miles of trails is no easy feat! TRTA staff work with our volunteer Crew Leaders, trail partners, and land manager partners to identify projects and maintenances needs in the TRT trail system. The trail projects aim to improve the user experience, promote connectivity to the TRT and other key locations, increase sustainability of the trail, and preserve the natural resources surrounding the trail. Check out our current and completed projects HERE.
