Citizen Science in Action: Help Us Protect Tahoe’s Wildlife
Every year, the stretch of US Highway 50 at Spooner Summit sees a dangerously high number of wildlife fatalities and is extremely dangerous for trail users. We are working to change that and we need your help.
Join the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and fellow outdoor enthusiasts for a hands-on workshop to support the development of a dedicated wildlife and human crossing. By learning to collect vital on-the-ground data, your efforts will directly influence where this safer crossing will be built. This is a incredible, family-friendly opportunity to become a citizen scientist and give back to the wild inhabitants of the Tahoe Basin!
What Volunteers Will Do:

Learn the Basics: Gain skills in wildlife tracking, print identification, and data collection methods.

Fieldwork Commitment: Participate in four rewarding field data collection days throughout the year to survey wildlife movement and trail use patterns.

Make an Impact: Help gather the exact data needed to determine the safest, most effective location for the new crossing.

🎒 A comfortable day pack
💧 1–2 liters of water

🥾 Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or hiking boots
🌤️ Weather-appropriate clothing (layers are key for Tahoe’s shifting mountain climate!)
📝 A notebook and pen
